Restoring the Riverbank - Reading Exercise

Reading text: A group of students from Northbridge College spent the spring restoring a damaged riverbank near their town. Years of construction had removed many native plants, and rainwater was carrying soil into the river. The students worked with an environmental organisation and first measured the condition of the bank. They then planted local grasses and small trees whose roots could hold the soil in place.

The project was more difficult than the students expected. They had to work on steep ground, and some planting days were cancelled because the river rose after heavy rain. Rather than giving up, the group changed its schedule and used the extra time to remove plastic and other waste from the water's edge. Local residents eventually joined the work. A nearby restaurant provided lunch on several days, while a gardening centre donated tools.

By the end of the project, the riverbank looked greener and less polluted. The students did not claim that the problem had been completely solved. They explained that the new plants would need care for several years before they became fully established. Their final report recommended regular monitoring and continued cooperation with local residents.
