When sixteen-year-old Daniel Kovač noticed how many plastic bottles were thrown away at his school every day, he decided to count them. In a single week, he collected 1,400 bottles from the corridors and playground. Shocked by the number, he wrote to the head teacher suggesting recycling bins for every classroom. The reply was polite but discouraging: the school could not afford the bins, and the council did not collect recycling from schools.

Instead of giving up, Daniel contacted a local plastics company, which agreed to pay a small amount for every kilogram of bottles delivered to its factory. He organised a rota of volunteers to collect and weigh the bottles, and within a term the project was earning enough to buy the bins the school had said it could not afford. By the end of the year, eleven other schools in the region had copied his scheme.

Daniel is modest about his success. "I didn't invent anything," he says. "I just refused to accept that nothing could be done. The hardest part wasn't the recycling — it was convincing adults that a teenager had a serious plan worth listening to."

Question: What was the head teacher's initial response to Daniel's suggestion?

HAVE YOU SEEN BOBI?

Our small white dog Bobi ran away from our garden on Tuesday afternoon. He is three years old and very friendly. He has short white hair, brown ears and a red collar with his name on it. He loves children and is not dangerous. We last saw him near the park on Partizanska Street. If you find him, please call Igor on 071-234-567. There is a reward of 1,000 denars. Our children miss him very much!

The letter had been in the drawer for nineteen years, and Ruth had promised herself she would never open it. Her mother's handwriting on the envelope — 'For Ruth, when she is ready' — had once seemed a kindness. Lately it felt like a sentence hanging over her.

She made tea she did not drink and stood at the window while it went cold. Below in the courtyard, her neighbour was teaching his small daughter to ride a bicycle, running bent over behind her, letting go and pretending he hadn't. Ruth watched the child wobble, steady, and sail on alone, triumphant, not yet aware she was unsupported. Something in her chest loosened as she watched.

When she finally sat down and slid her thumb under the seal, she noticed her hands were steady. That surprised her. For years she had imagined this moment accompanied by some dramatic weather of feeling — grief, or anger, or the particular guilt of the daughter who had not visited enough. Instead there was only a quiet, level attention, as though she were about to hear her mother speak calmly after a long silence, and it occurred to her that this — not courage, not forgiveness — might be what 'ready' had meant all along.

Question: Why is the scene with the bicycle significant?

The image is seductive: gleaming towers in the middle of the city, growing lettuce and strawberries on twenty floors, using no soil and a fraction of the water demanded by conventional farming. Vertical farms, their supporters claim, could feed the world's growing cities while returning farmland to nature. Investors have poured billions into the industry over the past decade. So why have several of its biggest names gone bankrupt?

The answer, unglamorously, is electricity. Plants outdoors receive sunlight free of charge; plants indoors must be lit, and lighting twenty floors of crops consumes enormous amounts of power. When energy prices surged in 2022, the economics of many vertical farms collapsed overnight. It is telling that the crops the industry grows profitably — herbs, salad leaves, berries — are those that are light, perishable and expensive. Nobody grows wheat in a tower, because a loaf of vertical-farm bread would cost roughly twenty times the ordinary price.

This does not mean the technology is worthless. In countries that import most of their vegetables, or in regions where drought makes ordinary farming precarious, the ability to grow food reliably indoors may justify the cost. But as a solution to global hunger, the vertical farm remains what it has always been: an answer to a question, though not to the question its promoters like to cite.

Question: According to the writer, why did several vertical farming companies fail?

Hi Tom,

Greetings from Spain! We arrived on Monday after a long journey — the plane was two hours late. Our hotel is small but very clean, and it's only five minutes from the beach. Yesterday we swam in the sea all morning and then ate fish at a little restaurant near the harbour. It was delicious! Tomorrow we're going to visit the old castle on the hill. Mum says it's more than five hundred years old. I'll send you a photo. See you next week!

Last spring, Marta finally did something she had been thinking about for years: she left her office job in the capital and moved to a small town in the mountains. Her friends thought she was making a mistake. "You'll be bored within a month," they warned her. At first, they seemed to be right. The town had one supermarket, no cinema, and the bus to the nearest city ran only twice a day. Marta missed her colleagues and the noise of the city more than she expected.

However, things slowly changed. She started teaching online in the mornings, which gave her a steady income, and in the afternoons she helped at a local farm in exchange for fresh vegetables. She joined a hiking group, where she met people of all ages who shared her love of the outdoors. After six months, when a former colleague offered her a well-paid position back in the capital, she surprised herself by refusing it without hesitation. "I sleep better, I spend less, and for the first time in years I know all my neighbours' names," she wrote on her blog. "Why would I give that up?"

Question: How did Marta feel during her first weeks in the town?
