Every spring, thousands of students prepare for exams by doing exactly the wrong thing: staying up late with their books. A study carried out at a university in the Netherlands followed 380 first-year students through their end-of-year exams. The researchers compared students' sleep diaries with their results, and the pattern was striking. Students who slept at least seven hours on the nights before their exams scored, on average, 11 per cent higher than those who slept five hours or fewer — a difference large enough to turn a fail into a comfortable pass.

What surprised the researchers most was that extra studying could not make up for lost sleep. Students who reported studying past midnight before an exam performed worse than students who had studied the same total number of hours but stopped earlier, even when the late-night group had covered more material. The explanation, the researchers suggest, lies in how the brain stores information: memories formed during the day are strengthened and organised during deep sleep, so cutting sleep short interrupts the very process that revision depends on.

The team is careful to point out that their study shows a strong link rather than definite proof, since students who sleep well may differ in other ways — they may be less anxious, for example, or simply better organised.

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS — RIVERSIDE SPORTS CENTRE

From 1 October, the centre will introduce several changes following the survey completed by more than 400 members this summer. The swimming pool will open an hour earlier on weekdays, at 6 a.m., to serve members who train before work. However, it will close at 8 p.m. instead of 10 p.m., as evening attendance has fallen sharply over the past two years.

The survey also showed strong demand for family activities. As a result, the small gym on the first floor will be converted into a children's play area, and family membership will be reduced by 15 per cent. Members who currently use the first-floor gym should note that all equipment will be moved to the main hall, which will be extended in November. During the building work, which is expected to last three weeks, the main hall will remain open, although some classes may be moved to different rooms or times. Members will receive an updated timetable by email in late September. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank members for their patience while we improve our facilities.

Question: What will happen to the first-floor gym?

The image is seductive: gleaming towers in the middle of the city, growing lettuce and strawberries on twenty floors, using no soil and a fraction of the water demanded by conventional farming. Vertical farms, their supporters claim, could feed the world's growing cities while returning farmland to nature. Investors have poured billions into the industry over the past decade. So why have several of its biggest names gone bankrupt?

The answer, unglamorously, is electricity. Plants outdoors receive sunlight free of charge; plants indoors must be lit, and lighting twenty floors of crops consumes enormous amounts of power. When energy prices surged in 2022, the economics of many vertical farms collapsed overnight. It is telling that the crops the industry grows profitably — herbs, salad leaves, berries — are those that are light, perishable and expensive. Nobody grows wheat in a tower, because a loaf of vertical-farm bread would cost roughly twenty times the ordinary price.

This does not mean the technology is worthless. In countries that import most of their vegetables, or in regions where drought makes ordinary farming precarious, the ability to grow food reliably indoors may justify the cost. But as a solution to global hunger, the vertical farm remains what it has always been: an answer to a question, though not to the question its promoters like to cite.

Question: According to the writer, why did several vertical farming companies fail?

Hi Tom,

Greetings from Spain! We arrived on Monday after a long journey — the plane was two hours late. Our hotel is small but very clean, and it's only five minutes from the beach. Yesterday we swam in the sea all morning and then ate fish at a little restaurant near the harbour. It was delicious! Tomorrow we're going to visit the old castle on the hill. Mum says it's more than five hundred years old. I'll send you a photo. See you next week!

Dear Ana,

I'm at the gym until seven, so please start dinner. The soup is already in the fridge — just warm it up on the cooker, but don't make it too hot! Then wash the tomatoes and cut some bread. Grandma is coming at half past seven, so please put four plates on the table, not three. Oh, and take the ice cream out of the freezer at seven — it's too hard to eat when it's frozen. Thanks! You're the best.

On Saturday, Marko got up early because it was his grandfather's birthday. First, he went to the bakery and bought a chocolate cake. Then he took the bus to his grandfather's village, about half an hour from the city. His cousins were already there, and they all had lunch in the garden. After lunch, Grandfather opened his presents. Marko gave him a warm scarf. "It's perfect for the winter," Grandfather said with a big smile. Marko got home at nine in the evening, tired but happy.

Question: How did Grandfather feel about his present?
