A Library Without Walls - Reading Exercise

Reading text: When the central library in Brookdale closed for renovation, the librarians had to find a temporary place for their services. Instead of cancelling programmes, they moved many activities to a smaller branch near the railway station. The branch had fewer shelves, but it had a meeting room and a quiet courtyard. Librarians used the room for language classes, homework support and talks by local writers.

The change created an unexpected benefit. People who had never visited the central library began using the smaller branch because it was close to the station. Commuters borrowed audiobooks and returned them on their way home. Parents brought children to Saturday storytelling sessions in the courtyard. The librarians also started a mobile service, taking boxes of books to two neighbourhoods that were far from any library.

After six months, the central library reopened with new study spaces and better access for people with disabilities. The temporary programme was considered successful, so the library decided to keep the mobile service and monthly talks. The renovation changed not only the building but also the way the library reached its community.
