His editor, Karin Lindqvist, believes the journals appeal to readers precisely because their world has disappeared. "We check our phones two hundred times a day and call it staying connected," she says. "Tomas watched one horizon for thirty years and missed nothing. Readers sense he possessed something we have lost, even if they cannot name it."

Twenty years ago, the fishing village of Portelo appeared in few guidebooks, and its narrow streets belonged to the 800 people who lived there. Then a budget airline opened a route to the regional airport, a film crew used the harbour as a location, and photographs of its painted houses began to spread on social media. Critics say these measures arrived a decade too late, and that Portelo has already traded its identity for tourist income.
