HAVE YOU SEEN BOBI?

Our small white dog Bobi ran away from our garden on Tuesday afternoon. He is three years old and very friendly. He has short white hair, brown ears and a red collar with his name on it. He loves children and is not dangerous. We last saw him near the park on Partizanska Street. If you find him, please call Igor on 071-234-567. There is a reward of 1,000 denars. Our children miss him very much!

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS — RIVERSIDE SPORTS CENTRE

From 1 October, the centre will introduce several changes following the survey completed by more than 400 members this summer. The swimming pool will open an hour earlier on weekdays, at 6 a.m., to serve members who train before work. However, it will close at 8 p.m. instead of 10 p.m., as evening attendance has fallen sharply over the past two years.

The survey also showed strong demand for family activities. As a result, the small gym on the first floor will be converted into a children's play area, and family membership will be reduced by 15 per cent. Members who currently use the first-floor gym should note that all equipment will be moved to the main hall, which will be extended in November. During the building work, which is expected to last three weeks, the main hall will remain open, although some classes may be moved to different rooms or times. Members will receive an updated timetable by email in late September. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank members for their patience while we improve our facilities.

Question: What can members expect during the building work?

RESTAURANT REVIEW: 'The Copper Pot', by our food critic

It is rare for a restaurant to annoy and delight me in a single evening, but The Copper Pot managed both. Let me deal with the annoyances first. Although we had booked a week in advance, our table was not ready, and we spent forty minutes at the bar being ignored by staff who were clearly overstretched. The menu, chalked on a board too far away to read comfortably, changes daily — an admirable idea, poorly executed, since our waiter had to recite it three times and still forgot the fish.

And yet, when the food finally arrived, almost all was forgiven. The roasted cauliflower starter, served with burnt butter and hazelnuts, was the best thing I have eaten this year. The lamb was cooked with real confidence, pink and resting in its own juices, and the plum tart tasted of actual plums rather than sugar — rarer than you might think. Prices are fair for cooking of this standard: expect to pay around forty euros a head without wine.

Would I return? Yes — but on a quiet Tuesday, not a busy Saturday, and I would ask them to write the menu down. The kitchen deserves a front-of-house team that matches its talent.

Question: What problem does the reviewer identify with the menu?

Hi Tom,

Greetings from Spain! We arrived on Monday after a long journey — the plane was two hours late. Our hotel is small but very clean, and it's only five minutes from the beach. Yesterday we swam in the sea all morning and then ate fish at a little restaurant near the harbour. It was delicious! Tomorrow we're going to visit the old castle on the hill. Mum says it's more than five hundred years old. I'll send you a photo. See you next week!

Hi Elena! Are you free on Sunday? Lisa and I are going to the new shopping centre near the stadium. There's a big sale — some shops have prices 50% down! We want to catch the number 7 bus at ten o'clock from the main square. After shopping we can have pizza at the food court — it's my birthday treat, so I'm paying! Bring a big bag for all your new clothes! Text me back tonight. — Sara

For thirty-one years, Tomas Andersson kept the light burning on Svartholm, a bare rock two hours by boat from the Swedish coast. He was, by the end, the country's last resident lighthouse keeper, and when automation finally made his job unnecessary in 1994, he did something nobody expected: he asked to stay. The authorities, puzzled but sympathetic, let him remain as an unpaid caretaker, and he lived on the island alone until his death in 2011.

His journals, published last year, have become an unlikely bestseller. They record a life ruled by weather and routine — cleaning the lens, measuring the wind, salting fish for winter — but what has captured readers is Andersson's refusal to describe his life as lonely. "People confuse being alone with being abandoned," he wrote in 1998. "I have the sea's company, which is never twice the same, and I know every stone of this island the way other men know their children's faces."

His editor, Karin Lindqvist, believes the journals appeal to readers precisely because their world has disappeared. "We check our phones two hundred times a day and call it staying connected," she says. "Tomas watched one horizon for thirty years and missed nothing. Readers sense he possessed something we have lost, even if they cannot name it."

Question: What was unexpected about Andersson's behaviour in 1994?

On Saturday, Marko got up early because it was his grandfather's birthday. First, he went to the bakery and bought a chocolate cake. Then he took the bus to his grandfather's village, about half an hour from the city. His cousins were already there, and they all had lunch in the garden. After lunch, Grandfather opened his presents. Marko gave him a warm scarf. "It's perfect for the winter," Grandfather said with a big smile. Marko got home at nine in the evening, tired but happy.

Question: How did Grandfather feel about his present?
